Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania and home of the largest indoor agriculture exposition in the United States, is not known for erotic art. But Jason Piper wants to change that. His gallery, The Arthouse Lounge located at 217 N 2nd St in downtown Harrisburg Pennsylvania will be hosting an erotic photography exhibition by nationally acclaimed photographic artist Michael Barone.
Piper approached Mr. Barone after one of his photographs was in a juried exhibition in his gallery. The work was of two female nudes in a pose resembling Michelangelo’s Pieta. During the conversation both Barone and Piper expressed the desire for erotic art to be seen in legitimate gallery space and not relegated to the internet.
The exhibition, “Censor This!” will run from August 15 through August 29, 2009 with the opening reception set for Saturday August 15th from 6 to 10pm. This reception will not only be a chance to meet the artist and see this body of work for the first time, but will treat patrons to cocktails served by tuxedo painted models done with liquid latex and a Chippendale style doorman. Because of the nature of the images this exhibition is for patrons over 21 only.
“This is the first time in my 25 years of photography that a gallery owner has given me cart-blanche to show whatever images I want”, says Barone “It’s very freeing”
The ArtHouse Lounge is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5 to 9pm with all other hours by appointment.
The hope is that this exhibit opens some eyes to the fact that erotic photography is a powerful artistic statement and should not be kept in the dark any longer.
